What is Guided Meditation?

The origins of guided meditation can be found in Western culture where traditionally it has been used by those of a more spiritual nature or by those wishing to enhance their psychic abilities. Over the last few years guided meditation has become increasingly popular with a mainstream audience who have seen just how effective and pleasurable a method it can be to help them relax.

The purpose of a guided meditation is to take you on a visualised journey, it is not about stilling every part of your being like you would with a transcendental meditation. They are perfect for the many people who struggle to quiet their thoughts and whose minds are forever racing in different directions. A visualised meditation gives such people something to think about. Through listening to a soothing voice and soft background music an over-active mind can be calmed and a state of gentle relaxation can be induced.

If you are suffering from stress then you could find this type of meditation especially helpful. Being guided on a visualised journey can be a welcome distraction and temporary escape from their everyday woes. These journeys can take the listener to far away magical lands, or for those more experienced it can help them link to their Higher-self, their Spirit Guides and their Divine Creator.

In order to get the most from your meditation it is best to spend a little time preparing for it. Set aside some time when you know you won’t be disturbed, turn off the phone and get comfy in your favourite chair or settled on your bed. Once you are underway with your meditation an experienced guide will take you to a fairly deep state of relaxation from which you will not want to be disturbed, it can be annoying as well as a little bit disorientating. I always recommend people put a glass of water close by before they begin as it can be a great way to ground you when the meditation ends and bring your attention and focus back to the moment.

It is very common to find guided meditations that have been developed to help people cope with everyday concerns such as money worries, stress and difficulty sleeping. More advanced meditations have been developed to help people cope with bereavement, to overcome addictions and even to ease and prepare the transition for those with a terminal illness. Other guided meditations are created [purely|simply] to take you on a [magical|wonderful] journey – [maybe|perhaps] you would like to visit the lost city of Atlantis, explore an Enchanted Castle or [take|set out on] a Shamanic Journey. If you continue to gain experience with guided meditations then it is possible that they can help you to achieve a higher level of consciousness. For many people a guided meditation is a tool for developing their psychic or healing abilities and for others it is a way of connecting with their spirit guides or higher self.

Whatever your reason for taking a guided meditation, be it simply for relaxation or for something altogether more spiritual you are sure to feel less stressed and more at peace afterwards.
